Re: Grains not growing.
Hi "reyecat" - Are you perhaps losing some "baby" grains in the
straining process if your strainer's holes/slats are too wide?  If
you have wide holes, then you might try using a fine-mesh one in
case your grains are the type of grains that self-prune (i.e., send
off "babies") in small pieces.  Mine are like this.  Individual
grain size stays fairly small, but overall grain volume increases
like crazy.  I don't even bother to try to distinguish
between "baby" and "mama" grains.  Did your grains start off as
dehydrated?  If so, they can take some time to get fully active.

Yes, grain growth is a sign of health of the culture.  It's not the
only sign, but it's a good sign.  If after exploring all other
possiblities, your grains still don't grow, I'd question the health
of your grains.  You might also try asking your grain-donor what
type of grain growth to expect.
