Hi Dave,

In answer to your question, yes you can make more kefir from the kefir that
you have.  Be aware that you can only do this 8 times before the yeast to
bacteria ratio gets out of whack.

Buttermilk and kefir are different.   You need kefir grains to make kefir.

If you write back to the list and tell us in which city you live, perhaps
somebody lives close to you and can give you grains.   If not, someone will
mail some grains to you for the cost of postage.
