Puh..leese Marissa , eucal....Y....ptus. Alas our dear koalas - another non
placental species which used to be made into all sorts of cute furry
paraphenalia - are now being decimated by infertility induced by an epidemic
of chlamydia . Habitat destruction is thought to be the main factor. For
such a small population we sure know how to clear native vegetation. Which
leads me to speculate - introduced species always seem to run amok. Why
don't we accept your koala immigration offer. Maybe they'll enjoy the
Uraguyan tourist experience so much that their immune systems will cast off
the chlamydia challenge and they'll proliferate in your chilly eucalypt
forests. Eventually you'll welcome us repatriating as many of the now plague
numbers of your very furry , very healthy 'koalasitas' that infest the
dwindling Uraguyan eucalypts, as we can fit on the boat. Koalas only eat
eucalypt leaves so your native forests couldn't be safer! Everybody is happy
(except the chlamydia). Feral fantasies aside, we affectionately refer to
koalas as 'drop bears' because they occasionally lose their grip on their
eucalypt perch and drop to the ground- an embarrasing mistake and usually
fatal. BTW , you're probably right about cane toads. I know it was somewhere
in the upside down part of your continent!

cheers,
Stuart
