Re: OT: Soap Recipe Request (was Re: Medicinal kefir grains?)
Oh, dear, I guess that would have been helpful for me to include that. lol
Sorry for the oversight. We aren't going to get kicked out of the group for
being off topic, are we? lol (you can tell i've been a victim of a few "bad"
crochet groups. hehehe ok, not "bad" really--just OVERLY FOCUSED)

My recipe for a good, hard, sudsy, pure castile soap is thus:

   2 oz. lye
   6 oz. water
   16 oz. olive oil

Dissolve lye in water until fumes stop coming off the top. Pour olive oil in
glass or metal blender--I think a plastic pitcher blender might melt from the
lye? (I don't know--I always use glass) Start the blender on low, and pour lye
water in slowly until all in. Let mix until oil has come to trace--in other
words, thicken. You can put the lid on and turn it up to high if you want it to
go quicker. I usually let it go till it is the consistancy of vanilla pudding.
If you've made soap before, you know what this is. If not--lots of soapmaking
instructions on the web! Then pour into molds, and allow to get hard a few
hours--but not so hard that you can't cut it!! Cut into bars, and place in
cool, dry place to cure for 4 weeks. Makes GREAT soap, mild enough for the most
sensitive skin. Doesn't have to be organic olive oil (unless you are going to
sell it as organic soap). I find the cheapest olive oil makes the best soap. I
tried making larger quantities in the
blender, but just doesn't work--the blender pitcher isn't big enough for more
than a 1 lb. batch to mix safely. Clean up with white vinegar (neutralizes lye)
and as always, be careful handling that lye--it's not soap yet, really--the
"curing" is what makes it safe to use, as takes that acid (lye) and raises the
pH up to a usable safe level.

   Happy saponifying! ronsmysharonaoxox

Would you share your proportions of lye, olive oil, and water with us?
I
love making soap, but haven't for a while. I need a good recipe, a tried
and true one. I have used lard, but don't like the smell. I think I made
an olive oil one once and it was very hard and dry. Maybe using the blender
would decrease this problem or having the correct proportion of ingredients?

Thanks for any help.
