Thanks for looking that up. Since we would be removing the grains before
draining it sounds fine.

Aha! Here we go, straight from Dom's site:
Can I use metal utensils? The kefir-making
<http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/Makekefir.html> page of Dom's kefir
<http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html> in-site advises
against using metal objects
<http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/Makekefir.html#*Note> around kefir
grains. Dominic says that some metals can react with them. The reaction
may damage the kefir grains, or it might leach ions out of the metal. In
my experience, short term metal contact causes no harm. I sometimes dip
a metal spoon in my kefir, such as when I want to retrieve an errant
kefir grain. If you must use a metal container, stainless steel would be
the best choice.
