Hi Linda,

Yes I did make a mistake of using white sugar and I think you are
right about the brown.  Also, perhaps I've got too many grains in
my quart jar.  What's the ratio to water, sugar and grains?  My brain
seems to have a fine mesh over the memory part sometimes.
